When Ordinary Sounds Become Unbearable: What is Misophonia

When Ordinary Sounds Become Unbearable: What is Misophonia

It started with something very ordinary. We were having dinner, and my sister suddenly stopped eating.

She looked irritated.
“What happened?” I asked.
“Nothing,” she said.

But it didn’t look like nothing. Someone at the table was chewing. A few minutes later, my sister got up and left the room.

At first, I thought she was simply being sensitive. Maybe she was tired. Maybe the sound was annoying her that day.
But then I started noticing a pattern.

Chewing
Sniffling
Pen clicking
Repeated tapping

Certain sounds seemed to trigger a reaction in her that I couldn’t understand.
Sometimes it was irritation. Sometimes anger. Sometimes she simply needed to get away.

What confused me most was that she knew the sounds were ordinary.
She knew the other person wasn’t doing anything wrong.

So I started wondering, Why can such a small sound create such a big reaction?
I began looking for answers.

And that’s when I discovered the word misophonia.

The more I read, the more I realized that misophonia isn’t simply about disliking annoying sounds.

It involves an unusually strong response to particular sounds or sound-related triggers. For some people, those triggers can bring intense emotions such as anger, disgust, anxiety or distress.
And something else surprised me.

The sound doesn’t necessarily have to be loud.

A quiet chewing sound that most people barely notice can become extremely difficult for someone with misophonia.
That made me think about my sister differently. I had been assuming the problem was the sound.

Then I realized the most important thing was:
What happens between hearing the sound and experiencing the reaction?

As I continued reading, I found that researchers have been exploring the relationship between the trigger sound, attention, emotion and the body’s response.

Once a person recognizes a particular sound as a trigger, they may become highly alert to it.
And sometimes, the anticipation itself can become stressful.

You know someone is about to make the sound.
You start waiting for it.
Then you hear it.
You try not to notice.
But now you’re listening for it.

And the more you focus on it, the harder it becomes to ignore.
It made me think about how powerful attention can be. The sound hasn’t necessarily changed.

But the experience of the sound has.

I also learned that misophonia is different from simply finding noise annoying, and it isn’t the same as every form of sound sensitivity.
Researchers are still trying to understand exactly why certain sounds become powerful triggers for some people and not others.

There is no single explanation that answers everything yet. And perhaps that was the most interesting part of my search.

I began looking for a simple answer about my sister. Instead, I discovered an area of psychology that is still being explored.

But I also discovered something much more personal. Before I understood what might be happening, I sometimes thought:

“Can’t she just ignore it?”

After reading about misophonia, I started asking a different question:

“What is happening for her that I cannot experience myself?”

The sound may still bother her. Understanding it doesn’t magically make the reaction disappear. But understanding changed the way I saw her reaction.

Because sometimes, what looks like overreacting from the outside may feel completely different from the inside.

And perhaps that’s one of the most important things psychology teaches us:

Before judging a reaction, try to understand the experience behind it.

Sometimes, an ordinary sound isn’t just a sound.

Sometimes, it’s an experience we cannot hear from the outside.
